A Golden Moment at the Hundertwasser Arts Centre
We celebrated a significant milestone with the Hundertwasser Art centre’s stunning golden cupola safely lifted into place. It happened early in the morning in still conditions, in front of a crowd estimated at over 5000, so the nerves were high that everything would go to plan.
The cupola, manufactured here in Whangarei by Absolute Stainless in conjunction with Guyco Kitchens and Joinery, has thousands of pure 24-carat gold leaf sheets (80 x 80 mm) each applied to the cupola one at a time by hand. The sheets are so thin that 1000 of them stacked up would measure just 1mm. Inside, tiling is still progressing, and outside, the external paving and landscaping are moving along at pace. Darrell and Marlene are incredibly proud of everything Team Trigg and the subbies have created and even more proud that all but two subcontractors are from Northland. Recently the 800th person was inducted to work on-site – an incredible number – and our team are on track to finish up and move off-site by the middle of October.
Did you know that you can BE PART OF THE ART too? With the Hundertwasser Art centre almost finished and due to open in December this year, you can buy art or become a donor and supporter, and you’ll be forever part of the art, story and legacy of this iconic building. Find out more here.
