A Word from Darrell: Constructive 2025

Over two incredible and very packed days in September, more than 500 people from across the building and construction sector, including me, came together in Auckland for Constructive 2025. Not just another conference, Constructive is a pan-industry forum – an opportunity for people from disciplines across the construction and property sectors to come together and drive positive change. The starting point for discussions at Constructive is always the ‘state of the sector’ survey, which provides a snapshot of the industry. Some of the key takeaways from this year’s survey include: cautious optimism is returning to the sector; homeowners are more positive than the previous year; consenting remains a roadblock; and communication is paramount. You can read the full 2025 survey here.

The Honourable Chris Bishop and the Honourable Chris Penk outlined the work the current Government is doing to allow the construction sector to build at scale and pace. Right Honourable Chris Hipkins and MP Arena Williams outlined what’s important to the Opposition and some of what they would do if elected to government.

Across the event, there were multiple workshops offering something of interest for everybody, and plenty to take away. If there was one defining theme this year, it was innovation and the role of AI in unlocking productivity. From practical case studies on using AI on-site, PwC’s launch of new AI tools for Master Builders’ members, and Glenn Johnstone’s closing keynote on what’s coming next, it was clear that technology is no longer just a buzzword – it’s a lever to deliver smarter decisions, greater efficiency, and more resilient businesses.

In my view, Constructive 2025 showed that we are moving out of the downturn with fresh momentum. The mood has shifted. Customers are more positive, the Government is serious about cutting red tape, and the sector is ready to embrace innovation. It was a very positive two days, with great feedback from attendees. If you haven’t yet been to Constructive, put it in your diary for 2026 and save the date – 3-4 September, Aotea Centre, Auckland.
